Irish Sea - Bellezza evidente e problemi nascosti

Il Mare d'Irlanda (Irish Sea) e' quel braccio di mare racchiuso tra la costa Est irlandese e la Gran Bretagna. Su di esso si affacciano Dublino e Belfast, da un lato, e il Galles dall'altro.

Nonostante la celebre bellezza delle sue coste, questo tratto costiero e' messo a rischio ormai da decenni da diversi problemi legati all'inquinamento: in primis, la contaminazione radioattiva dalla centrale nucleare inglese di Sellafield, che apparentemente sversa rifiuti radioattivi in mare almeno dagli anni '50, e crea e ha creato anche grosse divergenze politiche con il Regno Unito.

The Irish Sea is enclosed between the British and the Irish coasts. Dublin and Belfast are the biggest cities facing it on the Irish side. Despite the well-known beauty of its rugged coastline, the sea has been jeopardized for decades by the threat of radioactive pollution originated from the Welsh nuclear plant of Sellafield. This power plant apparently dumped contaminated cooling waters for yers (or decades) and has caused controversy between the two countries.

Attivita' in spiaggia durante la primavera irlandese. L'intera baia di Dublino e' contornata da una striscia di spiaggia che la avvolge dal capo settentrionale, con il promontorio di Howth e le sue scogliere, a quello meridionale, che sfuma nei monti Wicklow.

La centrale nucleare di Sellafield, sulle coste gallesi, ha causato e causa numerose controversie. Secondo alcuni studi sull'inquinamento da radiazioni artificiali nelle acque dei mari e degli oceani, il Mare d'Irlanda sarebbe uno dei piu' contaminati al mondo. Sellafield, anche a causa di alcuni incidenti e guasti, ha sversato rifiuti radioattivi o acque di raffreddamento degli impianti direttamente in mare sin dal 1952, secondo le piu' recenti ricerche. Addirittura, i governi norvegese e russo hanno ripetutamente protestato per il livello di contaminazione che anche il Mar Baltico avrebbe raggiunto a causa della centrale britannica.

The Sellafield nuclear power plant, on the Welsh coast, caused and still causes much controversy. According to some researches on the seas pollution, the Irish sea is one of the most contaminated by radiations in the whole world. The plant, also due to some incidents and leakages, seems to have dumped nuclear waste and contaminated cooling water directly into the sea at least since 1952. Recently, even the Norwegian and Russian governments raised concerns and protests about the contamination spreading North to the Baltic sea from the UK nuclear station.

Rifiuti e inquinamento sulla costa dublinese. Dublino possiede il maggior porto commerciale d'Irlanda, collocato al centro della baia e alla foce del fiume Liffey. Di origine medievale, gestisce oggi il traffico di navi container e da crociera che tocca l'isola. Anche per questo motivo, oltre che per i rifiuti prodotti dalla capitale, la baia di Dublino soffre di livelli di inquinamento elevati.

Waste and pollution on the Dublin coast. Dublin owns the biggest commercial port in Ireland, located on the estuary of the river Liffey. Built originally in the middle ages, nowadays it handles a big volume of commercial ships - mainly container and cruise vessels. Even for this reason, beside the amount of waste produced by the city, the Dublin bay suffers from a high level of pollution.

Un traghetto passeggeri incrocia nella baia di Dublino, uscendo dal porto in direzione delle coste britanniche. Durante l'eruzione del vulcano islandese Eyjafjallajokull, ad aprile 2010, il porto dublinese fu travolto da un traffico enorme di passeggeri a causa delle restrizioni imposte ai voli civili: si stima che piu' di 70.000 persone partirono o arrivarono al porto della capitale nel raggio di soli sette giorni.

During the 2010's eruption of the icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajokull the Dublin port was overwhelmed by a huge wave of travellers forced to go by sea following the landing of all civil flights: it has been estimated than more than 70.000 people shipped from or to the capital's port in a 7-days span of time.

Un tuffo nella baia: nonostante gli allarmi per l'inquinamento (e le temperature non esattamente tropicali), alcuni abitanti locali nuotano regolarmente nelle acque della baia, specie in zone come North Bull Island o Dun Laoghaire, tradizionalmente aree da "gita fuori porta" per chi abita in citta'.

A swim in the bay. Despite the warning for the level of water pollution (and temperatures far from being tropical), some locals regularly enjoy a dive in the Irish sea, especially in popular areas like North Bull Island or Dun Laoghaire - traditionally, weekend escape sites for the citizens.

Le isole Skelligs sono poco piu' che aguzzi scogli al largo della costa Ovest d'Irlanda, ma e' impossibile non rimanere affascinati dal loro profilo. Perse nella foschia dell'oceano Atlantico, disabitate ma un tempo luogo di eremitismo spirituale, ti fanno riflettere ad ogni sguardo.

E se il vero mondo non fosse qui dentro?

Skelligs islands are little more than rocks off the western Irish coast, but it's impossible not to remain intrigued by their vague, harsh profile. Lost in the Atlantic Ocean morning haze, unmanned but once home to spiritual hermitage, they make you reflect at every gaze.

La centrale elettrica di Poolbeg e' uno dei luoghi-simbolo di Dublino che preferisco includere nelle mie foto di panorami: di sicuro non il piu' attraente, ma trovo che contrasti molto bene con l'atmosfera vibrante e l'attitudine positiva della citta'. Per questo scatto ho voluto ritrarre la varieta' di persone durante una passeggiata su North Bull Island, nel mezzo della baia, come se stessero marciando silenziosamente verso la centrale. Ho scelto di chiudere molto l'obiettivo per ridurre il bagliore del sole, quasi direttamente di fronte alla fotocamera, e per dare risalto alla foschia mattutina in lontananza. A mio parere, il risultato e' sognante e in qualche modo anche un po' apocalittico.

The Poolbeg power station is one of Dublin's landmarks I prefer as a subject in my landscape photography. Not the most beautiful one for sure, but it contrasts really well with the city's vibrant life and positive attitude. For this shot I wanted to capture the variety of people having a walk on North Bull Island's beach as they were quietly marching towards the power station. I've chosen a narrow aperture to reduce the glare of the sun, as it was almost directly in the lens, and to enhance the morning fog on the distance. In my eyes, the result is dreamy and somewhat apocalyptic too.

La passeggiata costiera di Clontarf, nella parte Nord di Dublino, e' stata creata nel 1920 e ripetutamente difesa dalle mareggiate e dall'erosione dovuta all'azione atmosferica. Oggi e' una delle aree piu' frequentate da joggers e camminatori, e con la bassa marea assume particolare fascino, grazie a un aspetto quasi desolato dell'insenatura.

Greenland, il dopobomba

Nonostante un nome ambizioso (che si traduce si' letteralmente come "terra verde", ma e' anche il nome inglese della Groenlandia), Greenland non e' un'enorme isola dispersa nei mari del Nord, ma piu' semplicemente un grosso parco divertimenti nato verso la meta' degli anni '60, in coincidenza con fenomeni del tipo di Gardaland, e oggi abbandonato a seguito delle solite malversazioni finanziarie e problemi legali. Per la precisione, il parco e' in stato di sequestro della polizia giudiziaria dalla Pasquetta del 2002, ufficialmente per mancanza di conformita' a non meglio precisate regole igieniche.

A prescindere, si tratta di uno dei luoghi piu' cupamente affascinanti e nascosti del gia' affascinante Parco delle Groane, che copre un bel pezzo di Brianza, a Nord di Milano. Per quanto sia chiuso al pubblico, pare che a superare il barettino rimasto aperto ai suoi margini non ci voglia tanto, ed e' cosi' che riusciamo a realizzare questa serie di fotografie.

Ad accoglierci c'e' l'ottovolante: serve a far capire subito che non siamo in mezzo a un vecchio luna park di paese, ma a un vero e proprio parco divertimenti strutturato come i piu' grossi realizzati in Italia. Arrugginito, ma ancora integro, appare spettrale - e non sara' l'unico - nella luce del tramonto invernale.

Impressionanti, e probabilmente non per i motivi scelti dai creatori del parco, anche altre attrazioni o semplici dettagli. Fa decisamente venire i brividi trovarsi di fronte al trenino che percorreva tutto il perimetro del parco trasportando i bambini, oggi abbandonato a marcire sotto alla tettoia della "stazione" di partenza; o il calcinculo, i cui seggiolini sono avvolti in sacchi di plastica in un disperato tentativo di prevenire il degrado. Ma il meglio arriva da cio' che non ti aspetti: i cestini dell'immondizia, a forma di orso, con disegni spesso diversi tra loro, alcuni dei quali davvero inquietanti.

Da brividi, di nuovo, i segni del lavoro e del passaggio umano: le biglietterie con cartelli in un italiano d'altri tempi, i punchballs, la giostra delle automobili e infine un autoscontro immerso nel buio (la foto che vedete e' stata realizzata con una lunga esposizione e nettamente sovraesposta). Il divertimento era la regola, e sembra quasi che gli ultimi bimbi siano scesi dalle giostre giusto l'altro giorno. A divertirsi qui restano solo le loro memorie.

Dopo ben 2 anni e rotti dalla creazione di Italianate a Dublino, mi sono finalmente deciso a pubblicarne la versione fotografica: non solo ironia e divertimento, ma semplici foto di vita quotidiana, panorami, dettagli, people di Dublino.

Nessuna ambizione, solo divertimento, e speriamo che possa servire a chi vede Dublino "da fuori" e ne e' incuriosito :)
